Red Lion Chambers has assisted BNGR file submissions at the International Criminal Court in relation to the Rohingya crisis

June 20, 2018

Nina Tavakoli, Adam Wiseman QC, Daniel Robinson, Aimee Riese, Tim Godfrey, Laura Hoyano and BNGR have made submissions asserting that the ICC is authorised to exercise jurisdiction over the deportation of more than 670,000 Rohingya from Myanmar to Bangladesh.

We contend that jurisdiction exists for the ICC to try crimes of genocide, murder, sexual violence, and persecution that have commenced in Myanmar and were completed in Bangladesh during the displacement of the Rohingya from Myanmar to Bangladesh.

The question of territorial jurisdiction arises as Bangladesh is a State party to the Rome Statute (Myanmar is not).
