RLConsultant Mark Guthrie and RLC member Sailesh Mehta have written an Opinion piece for Counsel Magazine entitled ‘Promoting and protecting judicial independence’.
They argue that ‘No jurisdiction can afford to be complacent’ whilst examining the circumstances around President Trump’s latest nomination to the Supreme Court, Boris Johnson and Priti Patel’s recent comments on the legal system and reflecting upon judicial appointments systems and politicians’ attitudes to judges worldwide.
“There is a heightened need for the Bar to continue to be on guard against further attacks on judicial independence and the role of the judiciary. The Bar must play its role in explaining to the public why judicial independence is fundamental to the rule of law and a democratic society.”
